Land Cruiser Fun

Posted in LifeStyle with tags , , , , , , , , on 4 October 2010 by Watcher Romano

September the 18th was the birthday of a very good friend of mine, the infamous Stroe. We gathered at Ruxi’s place in Bran to celebrate his passing from the young to the not-anymore :-) With this occasion we also did a bit of offroading (softroading) :

If you like the offroad, there are more posts like this here on this blog. Also, be sure to check back frequently, or better yet, choose to be automatically notified (via RSS or email ) whenever I post something new.

Leaota Peak via Stoenesti

Posted in Beautiful Romania, Travel with tags , , , , , , on 23 August 2010 by Watcher Romano

It’s the fourth time I’ve tried to summon Leaota Peak and the second time I managed to do it. This time on the ‘easy’ road starting in  the Stoenesti village of Arges (on DN7).

There are some 25 kilometers from the national road up to the peak, and the road is pretty bad for small cars. It’s not exactly easy for 4x4s either, because the recent floods have taken considerable chunks of the road, and in som eplaces one needs to climb the wall in order to fit on the road.

It is however a very worthwhile trip:

The last photo is a path that haunts my dreams since the first time we managed to get there: it’s from the actual peak, going into the ‘opposite direction’. i think it could be done (especially downwards :-) ) with some care, and a wee bit more difficult on the ascent. But I would really really like to have some prepared cars and make an expedition to see where we could get to…

If you stumbled upon this post by accident, check back frequently (via RSS or email ) because there are a lot of pictures showing how beautiful our country is, and another lot of pictures showing offroad adventures.

If you are interested in going there, just take DN7 from Targoviste to Campulung and take a right hand turn in Stoenesti (first village after the infamous Radu Voda rupestrian church), following the “Valea Badenilor”  indicator. You will then find a “Vf Leaota 22 km” indicator and then you’re lost :-) . You have to cross the SECOND bridge after you find aforementioned indicator and just keep that road. some 15 kilometers later you will find the first serious junction, where you will follow the original road, that is, you will keep left.

That’s it! When the road finishes, you need to turn 195 degrees to the right and climb on the peak. Good Luck!

New Expedition in the Capatanii Mountains

Posted in Beautiful Romania, LifeStyle with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on 28 June 2010 by Watcher Romano

After last year’s expedition I knew we had to come back for more. I have agreed with the White Wolves to make another attempt to find the way between Horezu and Curmatura Oltetului last Saturday, June 26th, 2010 AD :-) There is a lot to show, but for now I will only post some unedited videos ( HD video shot with a handheld Flip Camera)

And we reached the fitfh peak over 2000m high BY CAR in the past 12 months :-) – Nedei Peak . After that we went down to Curmatura Oltetului and stopped a bit to see the overflowing dam at Lake Petrimanu

In Ciugnetu we split into two groups. My group went to Valea Macesului and did Strategica once again da capo al fine:

We did go into a deep fog after Plaiul Poienilor, so the only shots we could take after this were at the end of Strategica, where some colleagues from other forums said there was a 4 m deep pool. We just HAD to stop and check. Razvanutza plays Moses:

There are several additional videos on my youtube channel.

I have to admit that video is not my thing, but I would also like to invite you to come back very soon (via RSS or email ) for photos from this trip into a wonderful area.

Brasov Offroad day with Flow

Posted in LifeStyle with tags , , , , , , , , , , on 30 March 2010 by Watcher Romano

Last weekend I was in the Brasov area. I did phone several offroaders from Brasov but they decided they had better things to do on Saturday. The only person who graciously accepted my invitation was the infamous FLOW :-) . He was kind enough to revamp his entire schedule (he was attending a drifting show at the mall !) and lead us on a very interesting and challenging offroad track. I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves:

Stay tuned (RSS or email) for some HD videos and an amazing wallpaper with Flow’s city car :-)

Offroad pictures from the expedition in the Capatanii Mountains

As promised in yesterday’s post, today I give you the ‘offroad’ pictures we shot in our one day expedition in the Capatanii mountains:

In the next photo I am trying to conquer Balota peak and White Wolf Tavi is escorting to help in case of an accident. The others were waiting for us on the previous peak (Ursu). Tavi’s father asked us to leave him out of the car :-)

And this is me after (finally) catching my breath again. I had  left the car on the top of the peak and went descended on foot to check for a way to continue to the other side. I was not able to find a route and then realised I had wandered very far from the car. It took me around 20 minutes to go back (up) to tha car !!

As a short disclaimer, this was not an ‘offroad’ day per se, we did do some things that we could not have done with small cars, but offroadwise it was a very soft day (if we leave out the ascend on Balota, where nobody would join me)

Leaota Offroad

Posted in Beautiful Romania, LifeStyle, Travel with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on 15 June 2009 by Watcher Romano

This weekend was ‘offroad sandwich’ weekend (‘offroad pe paine’). Saturday I got some ‘extreme’ action near Sinaia : the mud in the forest on Cumpatu was considerably more wet and deeper than expected. But then,on Sunday, I visited an area with landscapes rivaling Curmatura Oltetului and Transalpina: the Leaota Mountains in Dambovita County. It was a good opportunity for the KDJ120 Land Cruiser to be ‘broken in ‘ outside the asphalt.

Most of the action took place on a great scenery, posing little trouble (one just neede tot go slowly, because there were a lot of rocks). However, we did manage to find a trail into the forrest that gave us a lot of headaches. Definitely will visit again! Here’s why:

Calugareni Offroad Day

Posted in LifeStyle, Travel with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on 12 January 2009 by Watcher Romano

Saturday January 10th, 2009, the swampy fields, forest and snowy hills near Calugareni, Romania hosted a 4×4 gathering comprising of some 35 cars and their crews,  kids, moto-parachutes and some dogs. Everything was planned here (Romanian Language). Some say it was a light offroad day, some say it was just light drinking. Here are some pictures from the event. There are a few more to come. I apologize for doubling some photos but it was the quickest way I could post them on several sites. There are three sizes of files: HD (1920×1080), web (800x something) and ‘regular’ – 1200 x something). Every photo can be used for non commercial purposes (that means that if someone uses it as a wallpaper I’d be glad :-P )

Ursus Free Track Day 2

Posted in LifeStyle with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on 7 December 2008 by Watcher Romano

Between December 5th and 7 th, URSUS the beer maker is sponsoring the first “urban offroad” competition. December 5th (Friday) was reserved for the ‘Hobby’ category, December 6th for the ‘Open’ category and Sunday December 7th is when the ‘Extreme’ category will be held. This is my (photo)report of the day.

The “Open” day meant that the track was pretty difficult and cars had to meet minimal requirements like having a winch, at least MT tires, etc. Judging by the going of events, a short wheel base was also vey useful, and the winch and MT tires were sine qua non.

To my shame I did not arrive in time to catch the start of the event, because, being Saturday, I slept until 11:40. But I was lucky enough to reach there just in time to see the perfect example that money is not all: billionaire offspring Costel Casuneanu was going at it when I arrived and he lent his name to a corner, because he did not manage to finish that corner on 4 wheels:

First Attempt

First "Attempt" - Nice going man!

Second Pass

Second Pass - a Save this time

One more thing is that the second pass was still in the first round. Yes, “WHAAATTT??” is the correct reaction to what I described happened :-)

Nobody else had any problems with the same corner. Furthermore, Casuneanu Jr managed to completely kill the car in the second attempt. Case closed.

Here are some ‘standard’ shots of other drivers and their passings:

but then did not manage to complete the second attempt – they got stuck at the early beginning. Too bad:

The firs upped it’s trickiness in between  rounds – several drivers had some problems in their second pass:

Part of the race, part of the track

As you can see, this Vitara’s driver  wanted to have some memories from this track, so they snatched a part of the first ramp. The most sought after picture of the first round must be this one (my account on club4x4.ro is not yet validated, so I was not able to post it where they asked for it :-( ) :

Just a few days before the event, there were voices on the club4x4.ro forum asking ‘why is it compulsory to have a hard top? why can’t we participate with a soft top?’ Well, the organizers must have foreseen this :

Why you need hardtop

Why you need hardtop

Just imagine these two shots if the car was a soft top. And keep in mind that the driver was the only one without a helmet !! There were also guys who sat this one out:

Not this time

but this is not about them. The second pass was much more difficult, especially because of the big hole, that was carved even more in the first pass, and became very hard to master in the second, causing a number of abandons:

Mind you, the last two cars are being towed out in reverse! There were some that did make it out, some very easily (a red Wrangler came out incredibly smooth while everybody else were sweating it) and some with hard work, talent and copilot work:

In the end of this post, I feel the need to also show the sponsor, because the everything was incredibly well organized (ON THE OFFROAD PART):

Well, actually we should close this with another shot of offroad action: the tires

On December 7th the ‘Extreme’ category follows, and I will be there for more photos. Check back! (Or use the email or RSS to be automatically informed)
