Offroad with X3M Ramnicu Valcea

Posted in LifeStyle with tags , , , , on 10 October 2010 by Watcher Romano

I just got back from an offroad day with the special guys from X3M Offroad. We had a very nice day, with great a track: difficult, technical, but not dangerous: the worst you could do was break something, but nothing serious.

This is the official thread of the trip, and I took the liberty to show these pictures / photos of me in action:

Valcea Offroad Day – 24 January 2010

On January 24th 2010, I joined the X3M Offroad Valcea crew for a relaxing cruise in the mountains near Valcea. We took a 7 hour, 50 kilometers long stroll in a completely untouched area. As you will see, the snow was pure, clean and shiny white. “The warm sun” we enjoyed refers to the white balance only, because the highest temperature we encountered was -8 degrees Celsius.

I will start off with a few pictures of ‘action’ but will end this post with much more pictures of the beautiful winter scenery we were lucky to encounter:

The official thread of this trip is posted here.

As you have probably noticed, some photos are in the 1080p full-HD format. I would be honored if you used them as wallpapers.

By now, any visitor of this blog should already be aware of the existence of technical methods to automatically receive new posts: the RSS feed or  via email.

Pahomie Hermitage – Schitul Pahomie

I will not rant about this monahal retreat in the Buila Vanturarita mountains. I will only point you to it’s official site to get more info, and I will show you a few pics I shot in the area:

Ladies and gentlemen, I am sure this is the shot you’ve been waiting for for some time now, so with no further ado, by popular request:

In this area of retreat, one tree stood very different :

Yellow Willow

Yellow Willow

Yes, it’s a willow in the mountains, at 1500 meters altitude (!).

I strongly suggest you visit this quiet lonely place. As well as the whole Valcea county, which has hidden churches gallore. If you want to go to Pahomie in the autumn you will need a 4×4, as the road is muddy and becomes very bad because of  tree cutters (big trucks) :

Also, keep in mind that pictures are coming from all over the world, covering travel sights and offroad adventures, so be sure not to miss any posts (use the  RSS or email)

Ocnele Mari Saltworks – Salina Ocnele Mari

Posted in Beautiful Romania, Travel with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on 3 December 2009 by Watcher Romano

I recently found out on my good friends’ the White Wolves forum that a new saltwork has been open for tourists.  It’s located near Ramnicu Valcea, in Ocnele Mari and has only opened in September 2009!  Being the action man that you all know me to be, I visited two days after hearing about it. Here’s a short photo tour:

And I promise you, there are more things to see / do inside (football court, basketball court, church, ‘event center’, shop, art gallery, etc. The surface is around 10 000 m (1 ha!). The place has a certain charm, so Thank you  NORO for this info !

THIS is the official site, with some dull pictures but the very important visiting timetable ;-)

On the other hand, in this trip, I also visited the Iezerul hermitage and the Pahomie monastery, so stay (by RSS or by email) tuned for pictures the next days.

Amazing day in the Capatanii Mountains

Posted in Beautiful Romania, Travel with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on 5 October 2009 by Watcher Romano

Sunday Sept 27th I  managed to gather som4 cars from Bucharest, drove to Valcea where we joined the White Wolves (with some other 10 cars) and we all ventured high up in the Capatanii Mountains. As luck would have it, the weather was on our side, so we were able to enjoy nature’s greatness and take home some wonderful mountainscapes. This kind of imeages are what makes all the efforts worthwile. The serenity stays with you for days… If you say the teaser, the wait is over!

One Wood Monastery – Manastirea dintr-un lemn

Posted in Beautiful Romania, Travel with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on 3 December 2008 by Watcher Romano

Just 25 kilometers after Valcea, in the small village of Francesti, exists a lovely small wooden monastery that is said of being built out of the wood of just one tree! I know what you’re thinking: is it a very small church or was the tree HUGE?
Well, here’s half of the answer:

Manastirea dintr-un lemn

Manastirea dintr-un lemn

and this is the other half of the answer:

Secular Oak

Secular Oak

If you know anything about Romania, I think it’s obvious to you by now that somebody felt the need to also build a brick edifice at the ‘One Wood Monastery’:

Brick-made "One Wood Monastery"

What would a monastery be if it did not have a mystic story? This one is as follows: one day somebody (some say it was a monk, others say it was a shepherd) found an icon miraculously appear in a secular tree, so he cut down one of the trees and made the whole church out of it, hence the name.

Whereas fountains and wells are a great idea to have as miracle workers, because people who want to make a wish throw some money therein – simple! Here is the problem with having a miracle working tree:

Please STOP

Please STOP

This is a place I strongly recommend you to visit, because it has a very special charme, it’s quiet and colorful. To get there, take the DN67 from Ramnicu Valcea to Targu Jiu, and very soon, after some 15-20 kilometers you will find an indicator to the left “To the One Wood Monastery” (in Romanian :-p ). From there you have some more 5-7 kilometers on an asphalt road.
