Bran – Moeciu Winter Day

Posted in Beautiful Romania, Travel with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on 7 March 2011 by Watcher Romano

I have just returned from a very relaxing weekend spent with my family in the Bran – Moeciu area, in Brasov county. This area is very well known and publicized so I always try hard to go to places and do things that most other tourists won’t do. This time, I think what saved me was Schitul Bran, in the small village of Simon.

At the time it was unfortunately closed, but were it open, I still could not have shown you photos of it’s inside, since photography was forbidden. On the other hand, I think the beauty of the day and of the surroundings still comes out pretty strongly from these photos:

The surroundings also provided some good photo opportunities :

I will conclude this post with some practical advice: In Moeciu there is a famous ‘resort’ – Cheile Gradistei which has recently opened a second, more remote version, the “Fundata”. I have tried to identify the road that appears on the map from Cheile Gradistei to Fundata (which is a village in the area), road  which appears to be closed by some guy planting a door across it (the same like on Strategica) . So after trying to find the passage, we gave up and stopped for lunch in the new resort, which was fatal for our day. I felt like at the seaside, in the proverbial times: everybody literally competing for the distinction of “worst services”. Keep away from this place:

This year’s Easter holiday has been very fruitful with photo opportunities, and I took most of them. This means a lot of posts are coming :-) . I’ll start with two large panoramas (over 1 meter wide at 300dpi) of Ranca and the surrounding mountains covered in an untouched beautiful white snow:

Valcea Offroad Day – 24 January 2010

On January 24th 2010, I joined the X3M Offroad Valcea crew for a relaxing cruise in the mountains near Valcea. We took a 7 hour, 50 kilometers long stroll in a completely untouched area. As you will see, the snow was pure, clean and shiny white. “The warm sun” we enjoyed refers to the white balance only, because the highest temperature we encountered was -8 degrees Celsius.

I will start off with a few pictures of ‘action’ but will end this post with much more pictures of the beautiful winter scenery we were lucky to encounter:

The official thread of this trip is posted here.

As you have probably noticed, some photos are in the 1080p full-HD format. I would be honored if you used them as wallpapers.

Paraul Rece Winter Fun

Posted in Beautiful Romania, Travel with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on 23 February 2009 by Watcher Romano

After a work meeting in the Paraul Rece area the weather was incredibly good so I could not miss the local offroad opportunities.

Starting on DN73A (from Predeal to Rasnov), at the bottom of the descent there is a small road to the right,  going “up” to “the priests”.  I firs took that road,  which was taken care of, almost completely cleaned of snow.

However,  I suggest wearing chains if you go on snow, because I did get stuck with the Simex tyres after one 180 degrees turn – the tires were polishing the icy snow and the car was stuck. I had a winch so I was able to move the car to get some snow under the wheels.

Here’s the track, the sinuos road to the left is DN73A (Predeal – Rasnov), after descending from Paraul Rece

It was fun for a warm up, and also a great opportunity to take some (nice?) photos:

Very quick we went back because the action until now was NOT (!) enough :-) For convenience we took the same road, did not bother to explore the possibility to go directly downhill:

Back on the DN73A road we turned right, and headed to Rasnov, where we were instructed to take “Drumul Glajeriei” up to it’s end, and then on a forest road to Tohanul Nou. I am having a rough time trying to draw this on the map (I can not find enough points and I did not have GPS with me), so I will only be able to show you the beautiful sites I encountered:

More Winter Photos

I am not a big fan of winter, mainly because it’s cold. I am prepared technologically (clothes, shoes, tires, 4×4, ropes, cables, etc), but I find myself harboring a constant desire for the summer to come. However, since I am not a bear, I cannot hibernate. This means that I still have to work.

Last weekend, work took me to the mountains in the Prahova Valley Region (Also called “Philadelphia” because of the “PH” in the registration plates). In the past few years, I have done my best to avoid this area of Romania, because it’s the most known and visited area in term of mountain resorts. This means  expensive, overrated, crowded and with bad services. Not to mention the fact that one needs to drive on the deadliest road in Romania in order to reach the area. It’s so deadly because of the high number of cars traveling each day, which means a high number of “buffaloes”.

That being said, there are enough things to see in the area that you should visit at least once. But, enough with the chit-chat, here are some photos from this weekend:

These photos really illustrate what a complete lack of creative ideas means.
